The Dining Room at Whatley Manor (Malmesbury)

Scores: 2 M*

Whatley Manor is a lovely spa hotel in the south of the Cotswolds near the M4; it is a very relaxing place with great service throughout.  All of this de-stressing, was needed after a horrible experience traveling up the M4 on a Friday night to get there.  The hotel’s main restaurant holds 2 stars and the cuisine style is probably what could be described as ‘modern French’ or something similar.  As we arrived at least an hour after we intended we skipped the tasting menu and choose dishes from the a la carte.

Hand dived scallops- pan fried, served with lightly warm smoked salmon, pickled cockles and walnut cream

Langoustine and chicken oysters.

Pan fried fillet of red mullet- topped with a light bouillabaisse consommé and served with deep fried cod cheeks and parmesan rouille

Fillet of sea bass- pan fried, served with caramelised langoustine tail, truffle and shellfish macaroni

Strawberries and jelly

Strawberry soufflé with compote and ice cream

The food is certainly of a very high standard.  My only criticism would be that I was not sure of the side dishes which the main courses (shellfish macaroni and deep fried cod cheeks) these were nice but I am not sure they necessarily added to the dish itself…
